Introducing Matthew Humphreys – Author of
‘Learning To Balance in a Wobbly World’

Matthew Humphreys is one of a few who has taken part in the Rickshaw Challenge for Children In Need.

This is the inspiring story of a man who is strong, resilient and inspirational. Matt is a shining example of a human being who doesn’t let the little matter of a brain injury stop him from doing what he wants to do in life.

With dyslexia and a brain injury, you’d not expect many people to write a book, but Matt has.

We asked Matthew some questions about his book.

1. When did you first start writing? (what motivated you to write and self publish your book?)

I first started working on the book/novella late 2023 early 2024 because I was a bit down with not a lot to do at the time and one of the support workers at my accommodation building suggested to start writing a book because she said I had an interesting voice and a story to tell. Once I started I found it to be almost therapeutic and it helped me out of a rough patch in my life. I am always interested in helping others so the natural thing would be to publish and help others by sharing my story.

2. Tell us about your book(s) and how it will help your ideal reader (who is it for and why would they want to buy it?).

My ideal reader would be someone in a similar position to me and they’d see if I can do it why can’t they and that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything

3. To be a good writer you must be a reader – who are your favourite authors and why?

To be honest I don’t read that many books but I do like listening to audiobooks for example I like David Walliams for the humorous ones Jk Rowling and Christopher Paolini for because they’re so descriptive and I sometimes listen to books about peoples lives like the little big things by Henry Fraser.

4. What’s been the biggest challenge in getting your book onto the bookshelf for sale?

My biggest challenge was staying focused and seeing it through to the end because anyone who knows me also knows how easily I can get distracted and start doing something completely different and being patient when other people were working on it giving it the final touches because I like to be involved in everything I do.

5. What advice would you give to anyone who might want to write a book?

Just go for it and take the plunge when you get started you’ll find it satisfying when you’ve finished . If you have ideas of publishing it might be stressful at first but then it becomes better.

6. Who would you want to say thank you to for helping you get your book done?

Melanie Alesbrook for telling me to write the book in his first place and all the help editing it as I went along

My family for most of the inspiration

My cousin Abi Watson for doing a amazing job with designing the front cover

And finally Mandy and David from TBWR Ltd (The Book Writers Resource Ltd) for helping me to publish
